In continuation of the "Catalogue of the Bursidae" (cf. „Zoologische Mededeelingen", vol. 14, p. 224, 1932), I now publish a list of the Cymatiidae in the collection of our Museum, after having revised that family. We are indebted to the work of KESTEVEN, DALL, PILSBRY & VANATTA, IREDALE, and others, for a more rational classification of the Cymatiidae. This family was formerly composed of two genera, viz. In this paper the German, French and Dutch editions of Knorr’s conchological work Vergnügen der Augen und des Gemüths are collated. The plates of the three editions are also compared. Brief biographical data is given, of the artists, engravers and collectors named on the plates. The French and Dutch publications are not only translated re-editions, but emended, complementary editions of the German work. Many figures of the plates are iconotypes.

An isolated gastropod homing scar, etched into an arcoscalpelline (cirripede) scutum, is recorded from the upper Nekum Member (Maastricht Formation, upper Maastrichtian) at the ENCI-HeidelbergCement Group quarry. A molluscan faunule from the Miocene Cumaca Formation of the western margin of the Tuy Basin (Venezuela) is described. The fauna yields two species of freshwater snails and a single terrestrial snail species. Tryonia vivasi nov. spec. is described from the fauna, and its biogeographical significance is discussed.

Between c. 23 and 8 Ma, western Amazonia was occupied by the vast Pebas long-lived lake/wetland system. The Pebas system had a variety of influences over the evolution of Miocene and modern Amazonian biota; it formed a barrier for the exchange of terrestrial biota, a pathway for the transition of marine biota into freshwater Amazonian environments, and formed the stage of remarkable radiations of endemic molluscs and ostracods. The lithological variation of the Pebas Formation has furthermore enhanced edaphic heterogeneity in western Amazonia, sustaining present-day high terrestrial diversity in the region.

In order to preserve the current use of the name Aegopinella nitidula (Drapamaud, 1805), going back to Rossmässler (1835), a neotype is proposed for this taxon. The specimen concerned is described in the present paper. Two alleged syntypes in the collection of Drapamaud, in the Naturhistorisches Museum, Vienna, are not accepted as syntypes because they represent two other species. The case is referred to the ICZN for a ruling.

'Achatina vassei Germain', 1918, of which so far only the holotype is known (figured), is now recorded from Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique (Sofala Province) north of the road Beira-Mtare (Zimbabwe). The systematic position is still unclear because of the lack of anatomical data; this taxon is probably a restricted-range species centred on the plateau of Central Mozambique. A list of the terrestrial molluscs of the ‘Greater Gorongosa Ecosystem’ from the literature and specimens in the Leiden Museum is added; Curvella whytei E.A. Smith, 1899, is recorded as new for Mozambique.

Gulella mkuu spec. nov. is described from montane forest in the isolated Ndoto Mountains of northern Kenya. Although exceptionally large for the genus, shell, genitalia and radula features suggest it is more closely related to the "G. sellae-ugandensis" complex than to other very large East African species in the subgenus Primigulella Pilsbry. G. mkuu spec. nov. is apparently endemic to the Ndotos.

Introduction Redfern described and figured a propeamussiid species (as Cyclopecten sp.) from the Bahama Islands, which he compared with Cyclopecten nanus Verril & Bush in Verrill, 1897,known from the sub-tropical and tropical western Atlantic. In fact, both species are more morphologically related to Similipecten than to Cyclopecten and therefore both are here classified with Similipecten.

Introduction During the Indonesian-French Karubar cruise to eastern Indonesia a new scallop was found near the Kai Islands, which was provisionally identified by Dijkstra & Kastoro(1997: 279, figs 156-159), based on a few dead specimens from the upper bathyal depths. Subsequently, more material was collected by the French Musorstom 9 cruise to the Marquesas Islands (French Polynesia), sufficient to describe it herein. All specimens (empty shells) were deposited in MNHN, with voucher specimens in the private pectinoid reference collection of the author.
